Dress for Success

Make a good impression by appearing well groomed, professional, and polished.

  • Get a hair cut if needed; older job seekers should consider getting an updated hair style.

  • Shower and shampoo your hair.

  • Shave; trim mustache, beard.

  • Clean nails.

  • Brush your teeth and use mouthwash; older job seekers should consider whitening their teeth.

  • Wear deodorant.

  • Do not wear heavy cologne or perfume.

  • Dress for the position you're applying for, but dress better for an interview than you would for a normal work day. For example, for construction or manufacturing jobs, suitable clean attire — khaki or dark pants with a collared shirt or professional-looking blouse — is acceptable. For business and professional positions, wear a suit. However, the more administrative position, the better your attire should be, regardless of industry.

  • Older job seekers should consider getting a new outfit; an out-of-date look can give the impression that you're not current with your skills.

  • In most cases, keep your clothing dark and/or neutral (black, navy, gray).

  • Wear minimal jewelry/accessories.

  • Remove jewelry from body piercings, such as eyebrows, nose, etc.

  • Keep tattoos covered.

  • Make sure your shoes are clean and polished with no scuffs or worn heels.

  • Wear conservative makeup.
