Interviewing Discover who you are, what your skills and abilities are, and then find a career that fits you

Types of Questions to Ask

By researching the company before an interview, you’ll not only be prepared to answer questions, but to ask them, as well. Being able to ask appropriate questions will help ensure you get the information you need about prospective employers so you can evaluate whether the job and/or the company is a good fit for you. Ask questions specifically about the job, but do not ask about salary or benefits until you are offered the job or the interviewer brings up the subject.

Here are some types of questions to ask during a job interview:

  • How would you describe a typical day in this position?

  • What are the usual hours?

  • What are the greatest challenges of this job?

  • How many other people work in this department/unit?

  • What other departments/staff would I be working closely with? Is it possible to meet them?

  • How long have you worked with the company?

  • What do you like most about working with this company? What do you like the least?

  • Where would I be working? Is it possible to see the space?

  • How do you foresee the company’s growth over the next few years?

  • Do you anticipate expanding this department/unit?

  • Does the job require travel? If so, what percentage or how often?

  • Would I be working independently or with teams?

  • What performance objectives would I be expected to meet during the first three to six months? After one year?

  • Based on our conversation so far, how do you see me contributing most to the organization?
